Lacquer Boxes: Painting Russian Troika
Storytelling and hands-on workshop
Traditional Russian artist and lecture, Marina Forbes, will offer a unique studio workshop on the rich Russian folk tradition of Winter Holiday Celebration and Palekh Troika painting.Palekh lacquer miniature painting goes back to the 17th century and features exceptional details painted with luminous Russian egg tempera paints on a black lacquered background with the intricate gold leaf application. The workshop involves the creation of a unique gift of a beautiful Troika and an exploration of traditional Russian Palekh painting techniques!
The workshop is open to adults, teens and families with children 6 and up. It is a great opportunity for adults and families to work together to learn about Russian crafts and culture. Participants will hear the story of the Grandfather Frost and his granddaughter Snowflake and will learn about their traditional Russian dress and customs. Russian Palekh painting techniques and designs are also introduced. The goal is to produce a finished piece of Russian folk art.
No painting experience is required for the class. Experienced artists will also feel very comfortable in this workshop. Throughout the workshop, students will be listening to traditional Russian music, and, during a brief break from the painting, there will be Russian tea served from a samovar under the Vassilissa New Year tree. All materials will be provided.
